Courage to Face the Future
I will remember the deeds of the Lord; yes, I will remember your miracles of long ago. — Psalm 77:11 (NIV)
The writer of Psalm 77 begins the psalm by discussing the terrible things that had happened to him. He later went through a time of questioning God's faithfulness. You can almost feel his doubt as you read his words in the psalm.
Do you ever doubt God's faithfulness? What do you do when you pray and fast asking the Lord to change your circumstances and nothing happens? Read what this writer did:
I cried out to God for help; I cried out to God to hear me.
When I was in distress, I sought the Lord; at night I stretched out untiring hands and my soul refused to be comforted.
I remembered you, O God, and I groaned; I mused, and my spirit grew faint. Selah
You kept my eyes from closing; I was too troubled to speak.
I thought about the former days, the years of long ago;
I remembered my songs in the night. My heart mused and my spirit inquired:
"Will the Lord reject forever? Will he never show his favor again?
Has his unfailing love vanished forever? Has his promise failed for all time?
Has God forgotten to be merciful? Has he in anger withheld his compassion?" Selah
Then I thought, "To this I will appeal: the years of the right hand of the Most High."
I will remember the deeds of the LORD; yes, I will remember your miracles of long ago.
I will meditate on all your works and consider all your mighty deeds.
Your ways, O God, are holy. What god is so great as our God?
You are the God who performs miracles; you display your power among the peoples.
The writer remembered all the wonderful miracles God had performed for him in the past. Then he praised God for His mighty deeds and past miracles. As you read his words, notice how his attitude changed. His doubting and questioning words turned into praise for the Lord's faithfulness.
When your future looks bleak or when you're going through a time of doubt and questioning, think back on the times that the Lord brought you through. When you're facing a tough time, you can find hope when you remember God's help in the past. Recalling His miracles and blessings will give you the courage you need to face your future.
My Challenge to You This Week
Make a list of all the miracles, big and small, that the Lord has performed in your life in the past. What He did for you then, He will do for you again.
